When an underground cable fails, every hour counts — a factory stops, a building loses power, or a utility feeder is out. Digging along the whole route is slow and expensive. Professional cable fault location finds the exact spot, usually within less than a metre, so only one small excavation is needed.

The four stages of cable fault location

  1. Fault analysis — what type of fault is it?
  2. Pre-location — how far along the cable is it?
  3. Route tracing — where exactly does the cable run?
  4. Pinpointing — where exactly on the ground do we dig?

1. Fault analysis

With the cable isolated and earthed, we measure insulation resistance between each core and the screen, and between cores, and check continuity. This tells us the fault type:

  • Low-resistance fault (short circuit, typically below a few hundred ohms).
  • High-resistance or flashing fault — the insulation only breaks down at higher voltage. These are the most common MV cable faults.
  • Open circuit — broken conductor.
  • Sheath fault — damage to the outer jacket only.

A breakdown voltage test with a DC or VLF source shows at what voltage a high-resistance fault flashes over.

2. Pre-location

Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR)

A TDR sends low-voltage pulses down the cable and displays the reflections. Changes in impedance — a short circuit, an open circuit, a joint or the cable end — show up at a measured distance. TDR works well for low-resistance faults and open circuits, and it shows joint positions and total cable length.

Arc Reflection Method (ARM / SIM)

High-resistance faults are invisible to a normal TDR. A surge generator fires a high-voltage pulse that creates an arc at the fault; while the arc briefly short-circuits the fault, the TDR takes a measurement. The fault then appears clearly as a low-resistance reflection. This is the most widely used method for MV cable faults.

Impulse current (ICE) and decay methods

For long cables or faults that are hard to ignite, the current transient from a surge (ICE) or the oscillating voltage from a DC breakdown (decay method) is analysed to calculate the distance.

Accuracy: Pre-location gives the distance along the cable, not the position on the ground. Cable snaking, slack loops and unknown route changes mean the real position may differ by several metres — this is why pinpointing is essential.

3. Route tracing

If as-built drawings are missing or unreliable (very common on older sites), an audio-frequency signal is injected into the cable and a receiver follows it along the ground, marking the route and depth.

4. Pinpointing

The surge generator ("thumper") repeatedly discharges into the cable. At the fault, each discharge creates a loud acoustic "bang" and an electromagnetic pulse. A ground microphone receiver measures the time between the magnetic signal and the sound; the smallest delay and loudest sound indicate the fault position — typically accurate to within a few tens of centimetres.

For sheath faults, the step-voltage method is used: DC pulses are applied to the screen, and an earth-frame (A-frame) detects the voltage gradient in the soil around the fault.

Repair and re-testing

After excavation, the damaged section is cut out and repaired with a suitable joint kit (heat-shrink or cold-shrink), matching the voltage rating, conductor size and cable type — often one or two joints plus a short length of new cable. After repair, the cable must be re-tested (insulation resistance, VLF withstand and a sheath test) before energization.

Common causes of cable faults

  • Mechanical damage from excavation by other contractors.
  • Poorly made joints and terminations.
  • Water ingress through damaged sheaths or open cable ends.
  • Overloading and poor heat dissipation.
  • Ageing insulation (water trees in older XLPE cables).

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is cable fault location?

Pre-location gives the distance to the fault; acoustic pinpointing then locates it on the ground, usually within less than one metre.

How long does it take to find a cable fault?

Many faults are located within a few hours. Time depends on cable length, fault type, route information and site access.

(Decay)
